Man Against Microbe
نویسنده
چکیده
Spirochaetes and Actinomycetes admitted into a "Textbook of Bacteriology," why exclude the Sporozoa and the Trypanosomes? Should we not rather adopt the teaching of Theobald Smith with emphasis on "parasitism" as a major biological fact, presenting all parasites wherever found in either the animal or vegetable kingdom? I must also record that less attention has been given to the revision of the important section on the "General Biology of Bacteria" than to those portions dealing with specific microorganisms. But you will be aware that the critic must "carp." This is an excellent book, one of the "few to be chewed and digested." PAUL F. CLARK.

Concerted activation of the AIM2 and NLRP3 inflammasomes orchestrates host protection against Aspergillus infection.
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a leading cause of infection-associated mortality in immunocompromised individuals. Aspergillus fumigatus infection produces ligands that could activate inflammasomes, but the contribution of these host defenses remains unclear. We show that two inflammasome receptors, AIM2 and NLRP3, recognize intracellular A. fumigatus and collectively induce protective imm...
متن کاملHedgehog: linking uracil to innate defense.
The ability of the gut epithelium to defend against pathogens while tolerating harmless commensal organisms remains an important puzzle. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Lee et al. (2015) reveal how pathogen-secreted uracil acts at two steps to induce ROS via the Hedgehog pathway.
متن کاملStreptococcus pyogenes escapes from autophagy.
Autophagy is important for innate defense against intracellular bacteria, such as Group A Streptococcus (GAS). In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Barnett et al. (2013) demonstrate that the globally disseminated serotype M1T1 clone of GAS can evade autophagy via streptococcal cysteine protease SpeB-mediated degradation of ubiquitin-LC3 adaptor proteins.
متن کاملChemically mediated competition between microbes and animals: microbes as consumers in food webs.
Microbes are known to affect ecosystems and communities as decomposers, pathogens, and mutualists. However, they also may function as classic consumers and competitors with animals if they chemically deter larger consumers from using rich food-falls such as carrion, fruits, and seeds that can represent critical windfalls to both microbes and animals. Microbes often use chemicals (i.e., antibiot...
متن کاملMacrophage–Microbe Interactions: Lessons from the Zebrafish Model
Macrophages provide front line defense against infections. The study of macrophage-microbe interplay is thus crucial for understanding pathogenesis and infection control. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae provide a unique platform to study macrophage-microbe interactions in vivo, from the level of the single cell to the whole organism. Studies using zebrafish allow non-invasive, real-time visualiz...
